Overview

The Upper Mustang Trek, often referred to as the “Hidden Kingdom of Mustang,” is one of Nepal’s most captivating and culturally rich trekking experiences. Located in the remote northern region of Nepal, this trek takes you through the ancient walled city of Lo Manthang, remote desert landscapes, and traditional Tibetan Buddhist villages. Unlike other trekking routes in Nepal, Upper Mustang has remained largely untouched due to restricted access, preserving its unique culture, traditions, and natural beauty.

The trek begins either from Jomsom or Pokhara, following the Kali Gandaki River valley before ascending to the arid plateau of Mustang. Trekkers experience a surreal blend of towering cliffs, deep gorges, and red sandstone canyons. Lo Manthang, the capital of Upper Mustang, is a living museum, showcasing monasteries, ancient palaces, and caves used by monks and hermits for centuries.

  • Exploring the ancient walled city of Lo Manthang
  • Visiting Chhoser caves, some dating back over 2,000 years
  • Stunning desert landscapes with unique rock formations
  • Experiencing traditional Tibetan-influenced villages such as Charang, Ghami, and Dhakmar
  • Magnificent views of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges

The trek offers not only natural beauty but also deep cultural immersion, giving visitors insight into Tibetan Buddhism, local customs, and traditional lifestyles preserved for centuries.

Best Season for Upper Mustang Trek

Choosing the right season is crucial to enjoying the Upper Mustang trek to its fullest. The region has a rain-shadow effect, making it significantly drier than other trekking areas in Nepal. This dry, arid climate means that trekking is possible year-round, but certain seasons offer optimal conditions.

  • Spring (March to May): Spring is one of the most popular trekking seasons. The weather is pleasant, daytime temperatures range between 15–20°C at lower elevations, and the mustard flowers bloom, adding vibrant colors to the otherwise arid landscape.
  • Autumn (September to November): Autumn is considered the best time for visibility and trekking comfort. Clear skies allow for panoramic mountain views, and the temperatures are moderate, making it ideal for photography and exploring monasteries.
  • Winter (December to February): Winters are cold, and nights can drop below freezing, especially above 3,500 meters. Trekking is possible but requires extra warm clothing.
  • Summer (June to August): This season coincides with the monsoon in Nepal, but Upper Mustang is less affected than other regions. The trails remain mostly dry, but occasional rain and dusty conditions can make trekking slightly challenging.

Regardless of the season, trekkers should prepare for significant temperature variations, from hot sun during the day to chilly nights at higher altitudes. Clear skies, minimal rainfall, and the remote desert landscapes make Spring and Autumn the most recommended seasons.

Upper Mustang Trek Difficulty and Transportation

The Upper Mustang Trek is moderate in difficulty, suitable for trekkers with some prior experience, though even beginners with good fitness can manage it. The trek involves gradual altitude gain, desert trails, and occasional steep ascents, especially around Lo Manthang and Dhakmar. Unlike high Himalayan treks, acclimatization is easier but still necessary due to elevations exceeding 3,500 meters.

Trekking Difficulty:

  • Daily trekking hours range from 4 to 7 hours
  • Elevation ranges from 830m in Pokhara to 3,860m in Ghiling
  • Well-marked trails, but some areas are rocky and dusty
  • Transportation:
  • Arrival in Kathmandu (1400m) by international flight
  • Drive or fly to Pokhara (830m), depending on the schedule
  • Short 15-minute flight from Pokhara to Jomsom is a convenient starting point
  • Return flights from Jomsom to Pokhara and drive back to Kathmandu

Local jeeps, private vehicles, and domestic flights make accessing Mustang relatively straightforward. However, trekkers should plan flights and road travel carefully, as weather conditions can affect schedules.

Food and Accommodation for Upper Mustang Trek

While Upper Mustang is remote, the trek offers comfortable teahouses and lodges with basic amenities along the route. Accommodation ranges from simple mountain lodges with shared bathrooms to slightly more modern teahouses in Lo Manthang.

Food Options:

  • Tibetan and Nepali cuisine dominate, including momos, dal bhat, and noodles
  • Snacks such as biscuits, chocolate, and instant noodles are available
  • Boiled water or bottled water is recommended to avoid dehydration

Accommodation:

  • Teahouses provide beds, blankets, and basic hygiene facilities
  • Hot showers are limited, more commonly available in Lo Manthang
  • Staying in local lodges gives trekkers a chance to interact with villagers and learn about their culture

Carrying light trekking gear, warm clothing, and personal snacks is advisable, especially for longer stretches between villages. Meals are usually prepared fresh, so vegetarian options are readily available.

Upper Mustang Trek Permits

Upper Mustang is a restricted area, and special permits are required for trekking. Glacier Nepal Treks assists trekkers with all necessary paperwork to ensure a hassle-free journey.

Permit Details:

  • Upper Mustang Restricted Area Permit, Mandatory for all foreign trekkers
  • TIMS Card (Trekkers Information Management System): Required for all trekking in Nepal
  • Restricted permits are usually issued through a registered trekking company like Glacier Nepal Treks
  • Permit fees are higher than standard trekking regions due to government regulations to preserve culture and the environment

It is important to apply for permits well in advance, as the government limits the number of trekkers to protect Mustang’s fragile ecosystem. Glacier Nepal Treks handles permit acquisition efficiently, ensuring compliance with all regulations.

Today we leave the ancient streets of Lo Manthang behind for a few hours and venture out on one of the most extraordinary excursions of the entire trek a fascinating day trip to the mysterious Chhoser Sky Caves. Stepping inside feels like stepping back through centuries of forgotten history a rare and genuinely humbling experience that few travellers ever witness.
The hike to the caves winds through rocky and dramatic terrain, with breathtaking views of the surrounding canyon walls, vast desert valleys and distant snow capped mountain peaks making every step of the journey as rewarding as the destination itself. After exploring the caves and absorbing their extraordinary atmosphere, we make our way back to Lo Manthang, where the afternoon is free to visit the ancient monasteries, wander the medieval alleyways, interact with local residents, and deepen your immersion in the living traditions of Tibetan Buddhist culture. Leaving the Lo Manthang behind, today's trek is one of the most demanding and physically rewarding days of the entire Upper Mustang journey. The trail winds through undulating high desert plateaus, open ridgelines and dramatic eroded terrain that showcases the raw and extraordinary beauty of this remote Himalayan landscape in all its glory. After a long and satisfying day on the trail, the small and wonderfully unspoilt village of Dhakmar emerges from the desert like a quiet oasis. With far fewer visitors than the more well known stops along the route, Dhakmar offers something genuinely precious on a trek of this nature real solitude, authentic local life, and a deep sense of peace that only the most remote corners of the Himalayas can provide.
The village sits surrounded by striking rust coloured cliffs and vast barren landscapes that create an atmosphere of almost otherworldly tranquility. Watch local herders guide their livestock across the plateau, share a warm smile with the villagers, and let the extraordinary stillness of this forgotten corner of Mustang sink quietly into your soul. Tonight a warm and welcoming teahouse provides the perfect refuge after a long and memorable day in the high altitude desert.

After breakfast at the teahouse, we bid farewell to the remote and extraordinary landscapes of Upper Mustang and begin the long but wonderfully scenic descent toward Jomsom. The trail follows the ancient course of the Kali Gandaki River, one of the deepest gorges on earth, winding through a landscape that transitions beautifully from the stark high desert terrain of the upper region to the greener and more welcoming valleys of lower Mustang. The contrast is remarkable and deeply satisfying after so many days in the arid plateau above. Passing through the beautifully preserved white washed village of Tangbe, with its buckwheat fields and ancient chortens, the trail continues to the familiar gateway settlement of Kagbeni a perfect spot to stop for lunch and reflect on the extraordinary journey that began here just days ago. From Kagbeni the trail presses on along the riverbank, the strong afternoon winds of the Kali Gandaki beginning to pick up as the valley narrows and deepens toward Jomsom. An early start this morning is well worth the effort. Arriving in Jomsom marks the triumphant conclusion of the trekking section of the Upper Mustang Trek. After days in some of the most remote and extraordinary terrain on earth, the comforts of this lively mountain town a warm shower, a good meal, and a comfortable bed have never felt more welcome or more deserved. Tonight raise a glass and celebrate. You have earned it.

Big thank you to Glacier Nepal Treks and Rabin KC

Mustang an unforgettable journey into one of the most fascinating and remote regions of Nepal. The landscapes were completely different from other Himalayan treks, with dramatic cliffs, ancient villages, monasteries, and the unique beauty of the Mustang valley. he traditional Tiji Festival in Lo Manthang. Tiji, meaning “prayer for world peace,” is a beautiful festival based on the story of Lord Dorje Jono defeating the demon Ma Tam Ru Ta, who brought water shortages and sickness to the region. Watching the colorful dances, traditional costumes, masks, and religious ceremonies gave me a deeper appreciation for Mustang’s ancient Tibetan Buddhist culture. Ganesh, was excellent throughout the trek. He was friendly, knowledgeable, and always made sure we were comfortable and enjoying the journey. The combination of stunning Himalayan scenery, fascinating culture, and warm local people made this trip truly special.
