Stand beneath the towering presence of Mount Manaslu and trek through remote valleys rich in Tibetan-influenced culture and ancient monasteries. Cross dramatic suspension bridges and conquer the breathtaking Larkya La Pass for unforgettable Himalayan panoramas. Experience raw wilderness, authentic mountain life, and the true spirit of adventure on the Manaslu Circuit Trek.
The Manaslu Circuit Trek is one of Nepal’s most spectacular and off-the-beaten-path trekking experiences. Encircling the majestic Mount Manaslu (8,163 m), the world’s eighth-highest peak, this trek offers breathtaking views of snow-capped mountains, deep river valleys, and lush forests. Unlike the more popular Everest or Annapurna regions, the Manaslu Circuit remains relatively untouched by mass tourism, giving trekkers an authentic Himalayan experience. Along the trail, hikers encounter traditional Tibetan-influenced villages, ancient Buddhist monasteries, and warm local hospitality that immerses them in the culture of the region.
The trek typically begins in Kathmandu, followed by a drive to Machha Khola, the starting point of the trek. Over the course of 13–15 days, trekkers traverse diverse landscapes from subtropical forests at lower elevations to alpine zones near Larkya La Pass (5,160 m / 16,924 ft). The route crosses suspension bridges, rivers, and high mountain passes, making it a blend of adventure, natural beauty, and cultural discovery. Glacier Nepal Treks provides expert guidance, experienced trekking staff, and proper logistics to ensure a safe and memorable journey along this remote trail.
The best time to trek the Manaslu Circuit is during the pre-monsoon (spring) and post-monsoon (autumn) seasons. In spring (March to May), the rhododendron forests bloom in vibrant colors, and the weather is generally stable, offering clear mountain views. Autumn (September to November) is another ideal season, with crisp air, minimal clouds, and excellent visibility of the Himalayan peaks. These seasons also provide safer trekking conditions as heavy snowfalls and rainfall are less likely compared to winter or monsoon months.
Winter trekking is possible but challenging due to extreme cold, icy trails, and potential road closures, especially around Larkya La Pass. Monsoon trekking (June to August) is not recommended as landslides and heavy rainfall can make trails dangerous and uncomfortable. Glacier Nepal Trek carefully plans itineraries around these ideal seasons, ensuring trekkers enjoy both safety and the spectacular natural beauty of the Manaslu region.
Season Highlights:
The Manaslu Circuit is considered a moderate to challenging trek. Trekkers need a good level of physical fitness to handle long hiking days, varying terrain, and high altitudes. The highlight of the trek, Larkya La Pass (5,160 m), requires careful acclimatization, as altitude sickness can affect even experienced hikers. Glacier Nepal Trek ensures proper acclimatization days, and guides help monitor each trekker’s health throughout the journey.
Transportation for the trek is straightforward. Most itineraries start with a drive from Kathmandu to Machha Khola, which can take 8–10 hours depending on road conditions. From Machha Khola, trekking begins on foot through villages, rivers, and forests. After completing the circuit, trekkers are usually driven back to Kathmandu from Dharapani, allowing a seamless start and finish to the adventure.
Key Points:
Along the Manaslu Circuit, food and accommodation are basic but comfortable. Teahouses and lodges along the trail provide meals like rice, noodles, soups, and local Nepali or Tibetan dishes. Fresh vegetables and meat options are available at major stops, while snacks and energy bars are recommended for remote sections. Staying hydrated and eating nutritious meals is crucial for high-altitude trekking.
Accommodations vary from simple rooms with shared bathrooms to slightly more comfortable lodges in larger villages. Some high-altitude teahouses near Larkya La Pass are very basic, offering warm blankets and hot water at a small cost. Glacier Nepal Treks ensures that trekkers are accommodated in safe, clean lodges throughout the journey and that any special dietary needs are communicated in advance.
Food & Accommodation Highlights:
Trekking in the Manaslu region requires special permits due to its proximity to the Tibetan border. Trekkers must obtain:
The Restricted Area Permit ensures environmental protection and limits the number of trekkers in the region, preserving its pristine landscapes. Glacier Nepal Treks helps arrange all permits in advance, so trekkers do not face any administrative issues during their journey. The cost of permits varies depending on nationality and duration of stay.
Permit Summary:
The Manaslu Circuit Trek is perfect for adventurers seeking serenity, culture, and panoramic mountains. Unlike overcrowded trails in Everest or Annapurna, this trek offers a peaceful journey through traditional villages, sacred monasteries, and spectacular valleys. The combination of natural beauty, challenging terrain, and cultural immersion makes it a rewarding experience for trekkers of all backgrounds.

The trail passes through traditional villages such as Jagat, Deng, and Namrung, where trekkers experience a rich blend of Gurung and Tibetan-influenced culture. Proper acclimatization is an essential part of the itinerary, with key rest days in Sama Gaon. Here, trekkers can explore Manaslu Base Camp, Birendra Lake, or nearby monasteries while adjusting to the increasing altitude. As the trek progresses, the landscape transforms from lush subtropical forests to rugged alpine terrain with breathtaking views of Manaslu, Himalchuli, and other surrounding peaks.

My husband and I hired Rabin as our guide for the Manaslu Circuit Trek. Rabin's more than 15 years of experience was evident from the start. He is a true professional and as such, was well adept at anticipating our needs, whether that meant giving us space to hike at our own pace or knowing when it was best to take a rest day for acclimitization. When there was uncertainty over whether we'd be able to cross Larke La due to snow levels, Rabin maintained a positive attitude and insisted we take it day by day. This went a long way in allowing my husband and I to relax and just appreciate where we were without thinking too much about a potential bad outcome. While it was clear safety was a top priority to Rabin, we were also confident in the fact that he would do all he could to get us over the pass. As an added bonus, Rabin is personable, friendly and a joy to be around. He speaks excellent English and was a valuable source of information during our trek. We very much enjoyed our many conversations with him. We had a great experience with Rabin and highly recommend Glacier Nepal Treks to both experienced and inexperienced trekkers alike!
Rabin was amazing! I cannot overstate how great of an experience we had with Rabin as our guide on the Manaslu trek. He is professional while at the same time flexible and relaxed. A perfect balance that only comes with years of experience. Rabin let us customize our itinerary and change things on the fly as we hiked. When we had questions, he had answers but otherwise Rabin let us hike the hike we wanted. As it was early spring on the Manaslu trek, snow levels were high and many groups were turning around before the pass. Rabin stayed optimistic and confident and got us over the pass!! This made our trek. On a personal note, Rabin is intelligent and well read with excellent English. He was a pleasure to converse with about all topics from politics to economics to game of thrones. You can hire a random guide when you arrive in Kathmandu, but from our experience the range in quality can be huge. With Glacier Nepal Treks the gauranteed quality and experience you will get is worth every cent you may have otherwise saved. Don't take the risk and hire an experienced guide!!
Trekking the Manaslu Circuit with Glacier Nepal Treks was a genuinely rewarding experience, made even better by our guide, Hemraj. From the long drive to Machha Khola through the final descent at Dharapani, his steady leadership and calm confidence stood out at every stage. Crossing the challenging Larkya La Pass at 5,160m is no small feat, but Hemraj's careful pacing, sharp eye for altitude symptoms, and encouraging attitude kept our whole group safe and motivated. He timed our acclimatization days in Samagaon and Samdo perfectly, and made time to explain the Tibetan-influenced culture and monasteries we passed along the way rather than just rushing us through. Beyond his technical skill, Hemraj was easygoing, quick with a joke, and genuinely invested in making sure everyone enjoyed the trek not just survived it. Highly recommend requesting him by name for this route.
Our Manaslu Circuit trek with Glacier Nepal Treks was a fantastic experience from start to finish, and a lot of that comes down to how well the whole operation is run. Our guide Ram was excellent patient, encouraging, and clearly experienced with the remote trails and high passes of this region. He paced our acclimatization days in Samagaon and Samdo perfectly and stayed calm and confident heading into the Larkya La Pass crossing, which made a real difference for our group's confidence. Behind the scenes, it was clear the whole trip was well managed by Rabin KC, whose attention to logistics, permits, and staff coordination kept everything running smoothly from Kathmandu to Dharapani and back. Between Ram's guiding on the trail and Rabin's organization off it, this felt like a genuinely professional, well-run operation. Highly recommend Glacier Nepal Treks for anyone considering the Manaslu Circuit.

The Manaslu Circuit Trek is considered a moderately strenuous to challenging trek due to its length, elevation, and remote sections. Trekkers will encounter steep ascents, long days of walking, and high-altitude conditions, especially when crossing Larkya La Pass at 5,160 meters. However, Glacier Nepal Trek provides experienced guides who ensure a manageable pace and proper acclimatization strategies. While prior trekking experience is helpful, determination, fitness, and preparation are key to enjoying this unforgettable Himalayan adventure safely.
Yes, altitude sickness is a possibility as the trek reaches elevations above 5,000 meters, particularly at Larkya La Pass. Symptoms may include headaches, nausea, dizziness, and fatigue. Glacier Nepal Trek ensures gradual acclimatization with scheduled rest days and shorter trekking segments at higher altitudes. Guides are trained to monitor symptoms and recommend adjustments if necessary. Drinking plenty of water, avoiding alcohol, and ascending slowly are important preventive measures. Emergency evacuation procedures are also planned for safety in case of severe altitude sickness.
The trek begins with a drive from Kathmandu to Machha Khola, which takes approximately 8-10 hours along scenic roads. The journey passes rivers, terraced fields, and small villages, providing a glimpse of rural Nepal. Glacier Nepal Trek arranges private transportation with experienced drivers to ensure safety and comfort. This drive serves as a gentle introduction to the region before trekking begins, allowing trekkers to observe local life and gradually adjust to the Himalayan environment.
The best time to trek the Manaslu Circuit is during the pre-monsoon (March to May) and post-monsoon (September to November) seasons. During these months, the weather is generally stable, skies are clear, and the views of the Himalayas are at their most spectacular. Spring offers blooming rhododendrons and vibrant flora, while autumn presents crisp air and striking mountain panoramas. Glacier Nepal Trek recommends avoiding the monsoon season due to heavy rainfall, slippery trails, and the risk of landslides.
Yes, trekking the Manaslu Circuit requires special permits. You need the Manaslu Restricted Area Permit (RAP), issued by the Nepal government, as well as the Annapurna Conservation Area Project (ACAP) permit for certain sections. Glacier Nepal Trek handles all permit arrangements on behalf of trekkers, including TIMS (Trekkers’ Information Management System) cards, ensuring that all legal requirements are met and that trekkers can focus on the journey without administrative concerns. Permits also help protect the region’s fragile environment and local communities.
Physical preparation is essential for a successful Manaslu trek. Glacier Nepal Trek recommends at least 2-3 months of cardiovascular training, such as running, cycling, or swimming, combined with strength training for legs and core muscles. Hiking with a loaded backpack on varied terrain can simulate real trekking conditions. Additionally, practicing stamina-building routines like stair climbing or long-distance walking will help your body adapt to the extended daily treks. Adequate rest, hydration, and proper nutrition are also crucial to maintain energy at high altitudes.
Packing appropriately is key to a comfortable and safe trek. Essential items include layered clothing for cold and warm weather, a good-quality sleeping bag, waterproof jackets, trekking boots, hats, gloves, sunglasses, and trekking poles. Personal items like medications, sunscreen, and toiletries are also important. Glacier Nepal Trek provides a detailed packing list before the trek, ensuring that trekkers are fully prepared for high-altitude conditions, variable weather, and long walking days. Overpacking is discouraged as weight affects trekking stamina.
Accommodation on the Manaslu Circuit primarily consists of teahouses and lodges, which provide basic yet comfortable amenities. Rooms are usually shared with simple beds, blankets, and sometimes hot showers, though water may be limited in higher villages. Glacier Nepal Trek carefully selects teahouses that maintain cleanliness, hygiene, and local hospitality standards. While facilities are more basic compared to urban hotels, the warmth of local hospitality, delicious home-cooked meals, and breathtaking surroundings make the stay memorable.
Food on the Manaslu Circuit is a mix of local Nepali cuisine and familiar Western dishes. Teahouses offer meals such as dal bhat (rice and lentils), noodles, soups, and momos. Glacier Nepal Trek ensures trekkers have access to nutritious meals, including vegetarian and special dietary options if requested. Eating frequently and staying hydrated is important at high altitudes. Although meals may take longer to prepare in remote villages, the fresh ingredients, warmth of local cooking, and panoramic Himalayan views make dining on the trail a unique experience.
Yes, the Manaslu Circuit is generally safe for solo female trekkers, particularly when accompanied by Glacier Nepal Trek’s trained guides and support staff. The trek passes through well-populated villages where locals are welcoming and hospitable. Basic precautions include traveling with guides, carrying communication devices, and maintaining awareness of surroundings. Glacier Nepal Trek also provides group treks, which enhance safety, ensure proper acclimatization, and foster a supportive trekking environment for all participants.
Mobile network coverage is limited in remote areas along the Manaslu Circuit. Villages like Jagat, Samagaon, and Bimthang may have sporadic mobile connectivity, while internet access is generally slow and sometimes unavailable. Glacier Nepal Trek advises trekkers to rely on communication in Kathmandu or major villages for important messages. Satellite phones can be arranged for emergency use. This limited connectivity allows trekkers to fully immerse themselves in the natural beauty and cultural richness of the Himalayas without distractions.
