Once considered one of the most iconic trekking routes in the world, this trek offers adventurers the chance to explore the vast Annapurna massif, including some of the highest peaks on Earth, such as Annapurna I (8,091m), Dhaulagiri (8,167m), and Manaslu (8,156m). The trek also provides the rare opportunity to visit Tilicho Lake (4,949m), which is one of the highest lakes in the world, surrounded by towering snow-capped mountains and dramatic cliffs. Along the route, trekkers follow the banks of the Marsyangdi River, traverse traditional villages, and ascend the formidable Thorong La Pass (5,416m) one of the widest mountain passes globally.

The journey is not only about breathtaking landscapes but also about experiencing the rich culture and lifestyle of the Himalayan people. You will pass through charming Manang villages, Gurung settlements, and Tibetan-influenced Mustang communities, giving a glimpse into centuries-old traditions. Trekkers also experience the dramatic descent to the sacred Muktinath Temple, a spiritual site revered by both Hindus and Buddhists.

  • Stunning views of Annapurna, Dhaulagiri, and Manaslu ranges.
  • Exploring Tilicho Lake, the world’s highest lake.
  • Crossing Thorong La Pass (5,416m).
  • Cultural immersion in Manang and Mustang villages.
  • Walking through the Kali Gandaki Gorge, the deepest gorge in the world.

This trek typically takes 15–16 days, although Glacier Nepal Treks offers options from 15 to 21 days depending on acclimatization needs and side excursions. It’s suitable for trekkers with prior hiking experience, though beginners can participate with some preparation.

Best Season for Annapurna Round Tilicho Trek

The Annapurna Round Tilicho Trek can be undertaken almost year-round, but the most favorable periods are spring (March–May) and autumn (September–November). During these seasons, the weather is relatively stable, with clear skies, moderate temperatures, and stunning views of snow-capped peaks. Spring brings vibrant rhododendron forests and blooming wildflowers, while autumn offers crisp air, golden fields, and panoramic mountain vistas.

Winter (December–February) is less popular due to heavy snowfall, especially around Thorong La Pass, making trails slippery and hazardous. Summer (June–August) is the monsoon season, which leads to landslides and obstructed trails, although the lower valleys remain green and lush.

Seasonal Highlights:

  • Spring: Blooming rhododendrons, moderate temperatures, and clear skies.
  • Autumn: Post-monsoon clarity, golden valleys, and vibrant local festivals.
  • Winter: Suitable only for experienced trekkers seeking solitude, but high passes may be closed.
  • Monsoon: Avoided due to landslides, slippery trails, and heavy rainfall.

Choosing the right season is crucial for both safety and enjoyment. Glacier Nepal Treks provides tailored itineraries considering the season, helping trekkers avoid dangerous weather while maximizing scenic and cultural experiences.

Annapurna Round Tilicho Trek Difficulty and Transportation

The Annapurna Round Tilicho Trek is considered moderate to strenuous, requiring good physical fitness and endurance. While the trek is accessible to beginners who have trained and acclimatized, high altitudes and long walking days, especially at Thorong La Pass, make this trek challenging. Trekkers should be prepared for daily hikes ranging from 2 to 8 hours and steep ascents at elevations above 4,000 meters.

Difficulty Factors:

  • High altitude trekking with potential for mild altitude sickness.
  • Varied terrain, including rocky trails, river crossings, and narrow paths.
  • Long trekking days with limited rest in remote areas.
  • Weather changes can be abrupt at higher elevations.

Transportation Details:

  • Arrival in Kathmandu: Trekkers typically fly into Tribhuvan International Airport.
  • Drive to Chamje: 6–7 hours along the scenic Marsyangdi Valley.
  • Return: After Jomsom, trekkers can fly to Pokhara (30 minutes) or take a tourist bus (6–7 hours) back to Kathmandu.

Glacier Nepal Treks ensures all logistics, including pick-up and drop-off, comfortable vehicles, and reliable local guides. Their team also assists with acclimatization plans to ensure safety and enjoyment during high-altitude sections.

Food and Accommodation for Annapurna Round Tilicho Trek

During the Annapurna Round Tilicho Trek, trekkers stay primarily in teahouses and lodges, which are simple but cozy and often run by local families. Rooms usually have basic bedding, and some higher-altitude locations may have limited heating. In remote areas such as Tilicho Base Camp or Yak Kharka, facilities are rustic, but the hospitality and views more than compensate for simplicity.

Accommodation:

  • Teahouses and lodges with basic rooms and shared bathrooms.
  • High-altitude lodges may offer blankets, but sleeping bags are recommended.
  • Reservations by Glacier Nepal Treks ensure comfort and availability during peak seasons.

Food Options:

  • Local cuisine includes dal bhat (rice and lentils), momo (dumplings), noodles, soups, and vegetables.
  • Western dishes such as pasta, pancakes, and instant foods are available at major stops.
  • High-altitude areas may have limited choices; trekkers are advised to carry snacks and energy bars.
  • Hot drinks like tea, coffee, and hot chocolate help with warmth and hydration.

Glacier Nepal Treks ensures trekkers receive nutritious meals, proper hydration, and guidance on dietary needs during acclimatization to maintain energy for long trekking days.

Annapurna Round Tilicho Trek Permits

Trekking in the Annapurna region requires several permits for legal access and conservation purposes. Glacier Nepal Treks assists with all necessary documentation before the trek begins.

Required Permits:

  • Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP): Mandatory for entering the Annapurna region, approximately $30 USD.
  • Trekkers’ Information Management System (TIMS) Card: Required for all trekkers, around $20 USD.
  • Restricted Area Permit (RAP): Needed for Mustang or restricted areas, depending on the route.

These permits ensure protection of the natural environment, safety of trekkers, and support for local communities. Glacier Nepal Treks handles permit applications efficiently, ensuring trekkers can focus entirely on their adventure rather than paperwork.

When my friends and I came to Nepal, we knew we wanted to do some trekking and somehow the stars alligned and we ended up doing the Annapurna Circuit with Rab. I felt from the get go that Rab was experienced and had our safety in mind and that continued through out the 12 days we spent trekking together. Aside from being responsible and experienced it was also just great fun trekking with Rab, we were always able to have a laugh as well as some more serious and interesting conversations. Having Rab as our guide really made our trip to Nepal and I would highly recommend him to anyone who is looking into doing any of the various trekking routes in Nepal.

Knowledgeable and Safe

I hited Chandra to guide me on the Annapurna Circuit to Poon Hill. Being female and traveling solo can be risky; but I felt completely safe with Chandra. He even went out of his way to take me to local landmarks and to explain some of the history and culture of the area...not to mention he took me to some of the best restaurants for dal bhat! This trip was a game-changer for me and a huge part of that had to do with my guide. I would hands down, absolutely recommend!

Amazing trek with the most professional guide

We came to Nepal in April 2015 to trek around the Annapurnas with 4 friends. Rabin was a great guide, and also a great friend given the circumstances : we were hit by a massive earthquake at base camp, and while a lot of people were panicking, he managed to make everyone stay calm, and get us to the other side of the mountain. Thanks again Rabin for these 2 weeks, for which we keep an amazing memory ! We’ll come back ;) Louis

Annapurna circuit and Tilicho Tal.

I hired Rabin to be my guide on the Annapurna circuit back in 2008 and we've stayed in touch ever since. He was very professional, knowledgeable and friendly. Not only did he ensure that I had a safe and enjoyable experience, he also turned out to be a trusted companion throughout the entire trek. Rabin served as a language interpreter and also provided me with a lot of information about the culture, history, plants and animals of the Annapurna region. Trekking with Rabin gave me a much more enriching experience than if I had trekked alone. Thanks Rabin. I hope my busy schedule will allow me to return to Nepal and trek again with your company. 14 Day Annapurna Circuit + Tilicho Lake Trek = Awesome Times

I got in contact with Rab through Family Peace Guest House in Kathmandu, and I was so pleased with the quality of his guiding/organizing and the trip overall. As I was travelling solo in early July (offseason), I had some concerns with the weather/ availability of certain amenities on the trek, but Rab put together an itinerary that gave me peace of mind 100% of the time, and we were blessed with great weather when it counted. While some travellers would be fine on the Annapurna circuit without a guide, trekking with Rab undoubtedly made my experience better, and I would recommend him to friends and family in a heartbeat. Great trekking, great times, and (low quality) pictures to prove it!

Best decision of our trek - bringing Rab!

Thank God we had Rab on our Annapurna circuit, he sorted so much, the route the best accommodation options, watched us for signs of altitude sickness and had a great laugh with us too. At one point I nearly slid down a snowy cliff edge and Rab jumped straight down (at quite a speed!) and anchored me saving me from the fall. I've already recommend him to friends without any hesitations!

annapurna trek

I completed the Round Annapurna Trek solo with Rabin KC, and it was an incredible adventure. The trek included highlights like Throng La Pass, Tato Pani, Poon Hill, and Annapurna Base Camp. Rabin guided me expertly throughout the trek, ensuring safety, comfort, and proper pacing for a solo journey. Trekking through lush forests, terraced fields, and traditional villages offered stunning views of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges. The diverse landscapes, combined with cozy teahouses and delicious local meals, made the trek both challenging and rewarding. Reaching the high passes and viewpoints was breathtaking, and experiencing the region solo gave me a unique sense of accomplishment. Thanks to Rabin’s guidance, this Round Annapurna Trek was safe, memorable, and truly unforgettable.

Best trek A Journey to Remember

Trekking the Annapurna Circuit with a visit to Tilicho Lake was one of the most rewarding adventures I've done, and Glacier Nepal Treks made every part of it feel effortless. From the winding trails through Chame and Manang to the surreal turquoise waters of Tilicho Lake at nearly 5,000 meters, every day brought something new. Crossing Thorong La Pass was physically demanding but incredibly rewarding, with panoramic views of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges stretching in every direction. Our guide handled the pacing and acclimatization expertly, keeping the group safe and motivated throughout. The descent to Muktinath added a meaningful cultural dimension to an already unforgettable trip. Highly recommend this trek to anyone seeking a true Himalayan adventure

Highly recommend Glacier Nepal Treks to anyone planning the Annapurna trek

Our Annapurna Round Tilicho Trek with Glacier Nepal Treks was an amazing experience from beginning to end. We arrived in Kathmandu late at night, and manager Rabin welcomed us very kindly and made sure everything was comfortable and well organized. From the first day, the trek was perfectly managed, with good communication and support throughout the journey. Our guide, Gamvir, was friendly, experienced, and very helpful every day. The trek through the Annapurna region was beautiful, with incredible mountain scenery, villages, and landscapes. Reaching Tilicho Lake was one of the highlights, although the trail was challenging and the high altitude made it tough. Crossing the pass was also difficult, but Gamvir supported and encouraged us throughout, helping us safely complete this challenging section. Rabin and the Glacier Nepal Treks team managed everything professionally. We truly enjoyed the adventure.

Frequently Asked Questions

General & Essential Info

The Annapurna Round Tilicho Trek is considered moderate to challenging. Trekkers must be comfortable walking 5-8 hours per day on varied terrain, including steep ascents, rocky trails, and high-altitude passes such as Thorong La (5,416m/17,764ft). Fitness is important, but prior trekking experience is not mandatory. Glacier Nepal Trek recommends doing regular cardio exercises, hill walking, and strength training before the trek. Our guides monitor your pace, ensure proper acclimatization, and provide support to minimize altitude sickness risks, making the journey safer and more enjoyable.

Altitude sickness is a potential risk on the Annapurna Round Tilicho Trek, as the trail reaches high elevations like Tilicho Lake (4,949m) and Thorong La Pass (5,416m). Glacier Nepal Trek emphasizes gradual acclimatization, offering rest days at Manang and Thorong Phedi, allowing your body to adapt to thinner air. Guides are trained to recognize early symptoms and provide preventive advice, including hydration, proper pacing, and medication if needed. Most trekkers manage altitude sickness successfully with these precautions.

Yes, the Annapurna Round Tilicho Trek can be customized according to your preferences. Glacier Nepal Trek can adjust the itinerary to include extra rest days, alternative routes, or side trips like Poon Hill or Tilicho Lake extensions. Trekkers can also request different accommodation standards, meal options, or private guide and porter services. The company’s flexible approach ensures that the trek can match your fitness level, interests, and schedule while still maintaining safety and an authentic Himalayan experience.

Permits, Costs & Booking

Yes, trekking in the Annapurna region requires permits. Glacier Nepal Trek ensures that you have all necessary documentation, including the Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP) and the Trekker’s Information Management System (TIMS) card. These permits are mandatory for trekking in the Annapurna region and help protect the environment, wildlife, and local communities. The permits also allow access to lodges and trails. Our team handles all permit arrangements, so you can focus entirely on your trekking experience without worrying about paperwork.

Weather & Seasons

The best time to trek the Annapurna Round Tilicho with Glacier Nepal Trek is during the pre-monsoon (March to May) and post-monsoon (September to November) seasons. During these months, the weather is generally stable, the skies are clear, and mountain views are at their peak. Spring offers blooming rhododendrons and lush greenery, while autumn provides crisp air and vivid visibility. Winter is cold with snow, and the monsoon season (June to August) brings heavy rain, landslides, and slippery trails, which makes trekking challenging.

Accommodation & Meals

Accommodation along the Annapurna Round Tilicho Trek consists mainly of teahouses and lodges. These provide basic but comfortable rooms with beds, blankets, and shared or private bathrooms in some areas. In remote regions such as Tilicho Base Camp, facilities are minimal, and trekkers should be prepared for simpler conditions. Glacier Nepal Trek ensures that all accommodations meet hygiene and safety standards. Hot showers and Wi-Fi may be available in larger villages like Manang or Jomsom, but in high-altitude areas, these facilities are limited.

During the trek, Glacier Nepal Trek provides three meals daily—breakfast, lunch, and dinner—at lodges and teahouses. Meals typically include a mix of Nepali cuisine, such as dal bhat (rice and lentils), soups, noodles, and Western options like pasta or bread. Vegetarian and other dietary preferences can usually be accommodated if requested in advance. Snacks, tea, coffee, and hot drinks are also available, though sometimes at an additional cost. Trekkers are encouraged to carry energy bars or light snacks for long trekking days.

Guides, Support & Safety

Hiring a guide and porter is highly recommended for the Annapurna Round Tilicho Trek. Glacier Nepal Trek provides experienced, English-speaking guides who ensure safety, navigation, and local insights. Porters can carry your heavier luggage, allowing you to trek comfortably with just a daypack. While it is possible to trek independently, having a guide and porter improves safety, logistics, and the overall experience, especially when crossing high-altitude passes or navigating remote sections of the trail.

Yes, the Annapurna region is generally safe for trekking. Glacier Nepal Trek prioritizes safety, using experienced guides, maintaining communication systems, and planning acclimatization days to reduce risks of altitude sickness. Trails are well-established, and local communities are accustomed to supporting trekkers. Weather, however, can be unpredictable, so it’s important to follow the guide’s advice regarding route changes or rest days. Natural hazards like landslides or river crossings can occur, but our trained team ensures proper precautions are in place to make the trek as safe as possible.

Tipping is customary but optional. On average, trekkers tip guides around $8–$12 per day and porters around $5–$8 per day, depending on satisfaction and service. Glacier Nepal Trek advises tipping according to performance, attitude, and the level of support provided during the trek. Tips are a meaningful way to show appreciation for the hard work of guides and porters, who carry heavy loads and ensure your safety and comfort in challenging high-altitude conditions.

Preparation & Equipment

Preparation involves physical training, proper gear, and mental readiness. Glacier Nepal Trek recommends cardiovascular exercises such as running, swimming, or hiking, combined with leg and core strength training. Packing layered clothing, sturdy trekking boots, a sleeping bag, and high-altitude accessories like sunglasses, trekking poles, and sunscreen is essential. Familiarizing yourself with Himalayan terrain, practicing walking with a loaded backpack, and staying hydrated before departure also help. Our team provides a detailed packing list and pre-trek briefing to ensure you are fully prepared for all conditions.
