Highlights

Overview

The Salleri to Everest Base Camp Trek is widely regarded as the classic route to Everest. This historic trail was originally followed by legendary mountaineers Tenzing Norgay and Edmund Hillary during their successful ascent of Mount Everest in 1953. The trek was once famously known as the Jiri to Everest Base Camp Trek, as it began from Jiri. However, with improved road access, the journey now typically starts from Salleri, making it more accessible while preserving the classic experience.

The adventure begins with a scenic drive to Salleri, followed by a gradual ascent through traditional villages, terraced farmlands, and lush forests. The trail eventually reaches Namche Bazaar, popularly known as the “Sherpa Capital” and the main commercial hub of the Everest region. A side trip to the Everest Viewpoint offers magnificent 360-degree mountain panoramas, including Mount Everest.

The route then continues to Tengboche, home to the renowned Tengboche Monastery, the largest monastery in the region. Tengboche is also one of the finest places to witness breathtaking sunrise and sunset views over the Himalayas. The next stop, Dingboche, is a beautiful high-altitude settlement nestled beneath Ama Dablam.

Reaching Everest Base Camp (5,364 m) is the ultimate goal of the trek. The journey is further enhanced by a hike to Kala Patthar (5,545 m), the best viewpoint to witness close-up sunrise or sunset views of Everest and surrounding peaks.

Like most Everest region treks, this is a comfortable teahouse-style trek, with well-established lodges offering good food and accommodation throughout the route.

The best seasons for the Salleri to Everest Base Camp Trek are spring (March–May) and autumn (September–November), when weather conditions are stable and mountain views are clear. Trekking during the monsoon is not recommended due to heavy rainfall and limited visibility, though winter trekking is still possible with proper preparation.
